I remember looking at the g64 file format a while back. It seems to be pretty generic. Could offset $0009 be set to $8C (140 in decimal) to simulate a 1571 format disk?

It's not a problem to make/modify a new file format, it's just that the emulators won't know what to do with it. :)

The VICE guys seem pretty active these days--I imagine if you provide them with a spec and a real thing they'll adopt it readily enough.
